Do It Yourself SEO

Excerpt #2 from Responder.com

Can I do this myself?

As you can see, effective search engine promotion can be very time-consuming. Most top-ranked sites have full-time professionals who ensure they remain on top and stay that way. Others hire professional agencies to perform their search engine promotion efforts.

With all the time, effort and information to learn, can I really do this myself? The answer is yes, but you will have to work hard at it initially.

The key to getting into search engines is trial and error. What works today may or may not work tomorrow. Nothing remains constant. This is good and bad. Good because it keeps deceptive sites using shady techniques on their toes and increases the quality of the search results. And its bad because it keeps the rest of us constantly on our toes.

There are resources for the individual site owner who wishes to perform their own Web site promotion. First, we would recommend visiting the Search Engine Forums , becoming a member, read everyones ideas and ask some questions.

There's plenty of other resources for the aspiring search engine promoter. Keep in mind that search engine promotion is a constantly changing field. To keep ahead of the game requires a diligent effort and plenty of research.

Last installment tomorrow...

Let me know it you think this helps you...

Getting Into Search Directories

This is an excerpt from an advice directory on Responders.com...
I hope you find it useful, I did.

How do I get into search directories?

Getting a top listing in search directories--especially Yahoo!--is essential to successful search engine promotion of your Web site. Here's some tips on preparing your site for submittal to search directories.

Pre-Submittal Tips:
Search directories are much more picky about the sites they choose to accept or reject. Remember: a person will physically visit your site and judge its content. For that reason, you must have a clean and intuitive site design coupled with high-quality information.
Spend some time looking at the other sites currently listed in the category you're looking at. What does your site offer that the current sites do not? How will you benefit the directory by being listed there?
Do a site clean-up. Make sure you're page titles aren't outrageously long, stuffed with keywords or worse than that, stuffed with garbage keywords like "Pamela Anderson or Pokemon". This is a sure-fire way to not get into the index or get banned. Make sure your META keywords and description tags contain accurate information.
Submission Tips:
Yahoo
Commercial sites must use the Business Express submission at a cost of $199. This provides "Guaranteed and expedited consideration of your site within 7 business days." learn more
All other sites may use the Business Express if they wish, but can also use the free submission. learn more
If you use the free submission, do not re-submit your site more than once every three weeks until it's accepted. Be very careful when choosing your site's title and description. The title should be your company or Web site name. Be sure to make the description short (two sentences max), readable and contain your most important keyword(s).
Looksmart
All sites have the option of Express Submit at a cost of $199 or Basic Submit. Express Submit guarantees that you "Get your submission reviewed within two business days." learn more
All sites submitted to the Looksmart directory have the opportunity of "suggesting" their title and description. Looksmart editors tend to greatly modify the suggested description, even with an Express Submit. If accepted, your description will most likely be very different from the one you submitted. They will also assign your site a specific weight depending on how relevant they feel your site is.
Open Directory
All sites are submitted to a volunteer category editor who reviews, edits and accepts or rejects your site's listing. Do not re-submit your site more than once a month until listed--category editors do not appreciate multiple, mass submissions.

What are Meta Tags?

Third and last installment from Responders.com advice: (it helps to have a knowledge of HTML)

When creating an HTML page, there's a section at the top of the code called the HEAD area. This section starts with and ends with . within this section are the TITLE and all META tags. The most useful META tags are the description and keywords tags.

META Description -- Use the META description to enter a 2 sentence, keyword-rich explanation of what your Web site or business contains or does. Keep this as short as possible while still providing a quality description.
Use this format: < content="enter your description here" name="description">

META Keywords -- Use the META keywords to enter multiple keywords, typically seperated by commas. Keep this to a maximum of 150 characters. Again, do not enter too many keywords or use irrelevant keywords (ie. pamela anderson or pokemon) just to get traffic!
Use this format: < content="enter your keywords here" name="keywords">

Be sure to add a proper page title that includes your top keyword(s) and possibly your company or sitename.

Here's a good example:

What do search engines look for?

Search engines look for quality text content. As stated above, the search engines can't read your graphics, flash presentations or dynamic content. However, they typically do index most of the text on your pages. Write, write and write again! The key to top search engine placement is good quality text information.

Be sure to include detailed explanations while tasefully repeating important keywords to achieve the correct keyword density. Of utmost importance is to create a keyword-rich Web site without offending your visitors or setting off any red flags with the search engines.

Once again, do not just keep repeating keywords for keywords sake. Repeat them just enough to increase your relevancy without sounding unprofessional to your site visitors. THIS IS A FINE LINE!

Because creating a keyword-rich Web site can be very difficult, it may be beneficial to hire a professional to optimize your Web site for you. There are many professional services that will analyze your Web site and help you make it search engine friendly.

Hope these words of advice help...

Distribution

Distribution is probably the hardest part of trying to get the word out about your site.
There are MILLIONS of sites to compete against for readership. They all have a message or something to sell. You have to find your niche.

If you use Blogger, you will default to Atom.xml. It is not compatible with most RSS Feeds. You can choose to use Blogger's RSS, but once you make the choice that's it, you can't change later.
You can choose to be listed to Weblog.com for blog distribution (you'll never find it if you look on their site). They spread it to other blogsites.
List your site to as many Feeders as you can find.

Some Blog Feeders I like are:

Blogcatalog.com
BlogTopSites.com
Popdex.com
Blogwise.com.

Some RSS feeders that accept the Atom.xml are:

FeedBurner.com (my favorite)
Feedster.com
Postami.com
2RSS.com (my least favorite)

If you use Feedburner.com you can list your site on most RSS Feeds with the link they give you once you list with them.
A good place to look for RSS Feeders for listing is RSSNetwork.com

These are only a few of the Feeder Sites I have found, there are plenty more if you look for them.

Let me know how you make out if you try any of my suggestions.

Tracking

Tracking is not something you want to do manually. You have to find a program to do it for you. Whether you have to track internally and/or externally, you have many choices.

If you use AdSense, they track sales through their system, which is very reliable.
If you have any Affiliate sites, they also track for you.
The more you have of these type services, the more you have to keep statistics of your own.

There are a few programs that still need manual input from you, or you will have to give them access to some of your accounts or passwords. This you DO NOT really want to do... So far I haven't found one I trust enough to purchase.

The Other type of tracking, is for RSS & Blog Feeds. These are provided by each individual service. Some will send information on Aggregates and Readers directly to an E-Mail address you provide. Some you will have to log in manually to get your stats. Still others offer no statistics at all, YOU will have to determine which type service to use.

Two of the Best RSS feeders I found are FeedBurner.com and CompleteRSS.
So far the Best for Blog Feeds are Technorati.com and BlogCatalog.com

You can check out some of the Sponsored Links in the sidebar to get an idea of what's out there.

Advertisements

It is totally up to you whether to include advertisements on your page or not. After all, it's about what you have to show, your products, etc.

The idea is to generate additional income by including ad's that are pertinent to your site. You can get something such as AdSense, which is provided by Google through Blogger. Choices range from Plain Text to various size Banner Ads. They use a Key Word Search to best fit ads to your site, and you can exclude competitors from the listing.

You could also use an affiliate you trust, putting links within your text or Banner Ads anywhere on your site.

These type of advertisements usually pay per click, and/or if someone actually signs up for the product. These services are mostly free, hoping your page will also draw potential customers to them.

Just remember to use these advertisements to your advantage, place them where people will click on them. One secret I have is when you put the link on your page, make sure it gets opened in a SEPARATE WINDOW. That way the customer never really leaves your page!
Good Luck!

Comments and suggestions are much appreciated. (Sorry, I had to add word verification)

Referrals

I think referrals are a very important tool in trying to get the word out about your site.
Use places you have visited yourself and thought that's a good idea, I would like to use that myself.

I always send an E-mail to the Administrator/Author of the site for permission to add them to my favorites. You will also want to ask them to reciprocate. Although, if you feel they will add some good content, reciprocation is not manditory.

Remember, information is one of the key components, so refer your readers (customers) to related sites. They will appreciate it, and return to your page again and again. (No, you don't have to refer them to competitors.)

Good Luck!

Information

Information is KEY to explaining what you are selling. If you are pitching something TANGIBLE, try to use PICTURES of the products. IDEAS are more difficult to sell, you must do it with WORDS.

Either way you need to be to SUCCINCT. Do not explain every little thing, people's attention span is too short. Only give them what is needed to get their attention.

Once you have a response from them... E-mail, forms, phone contact... you have time to go into more detail. Make sure you have YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION on the page where it can be easily accessed. ALWAYS include your contact information on ALL of your correspondence.
These may sound elimentary, but they are important.

Any comments or suggestions are always appreciated.

Layout

To present your ideas, products, and services you have to remember that these should come first on your page. Whatever you are selling should even be before your Company Name. Remember, the person viewing already knows who you are, that's how they got there in the first place.

They are there to see what you offer that others do not. They want to know what is special about your product or service. They want the best price.
SHOW THEM...
Put this information AT THE TOP...

In this respect, internet sales are no different than print. You only have a short time to present your information, there are a lot of other companies selling the same thing.
Be the ONE they BUY FROM and COME BACK TO... Offer special services, customer service, etc.

Good Luck!

Design

When you decide which design fits your style, (light and fluffy, down to earth, scribe, etc.) you will have to take the type of business you have (or are starting) into consideration. Eg. If you have a plumming business you may want something more "down to earth". As opposed to a background with clouds in the sky.

Most Blog programs have pre-determined choices or templates you can use included in your subscription. If you opt for a Web Page Designer, you will probably have to pay for their services, or at least download a program to do it yourself.

Either way, it is important to find something that will portray the idea of what you are trying to sell (even if it an idea).

If you have any questions or comments, you can either use the comment link below or the Request Information Form in the sidebar.

Working at Home... Easy?

Anyone that tells you Working at Home is easy and only takes a couple of hours a week, only told you half the truth. It is easy, no commute, no waiting for the bus in the rain, no traffic, etc.

BUT... If you want to succeed, especially in the beginning, you will have to put in A LOT more than a COUPLE HOURS.

It's no different than starting ANY BUSINESS. It takes HARD WORK. It takes a PLAN. It takes DEDICATION. It takes YOU.

Forget all the Ads that promote "Make $1000 your first week" or "Would you like to make SIX FIGURES your first year?". You have a better chance at winning the Lottery. Working at Home may even set you back a few dollars in the beginning.

I'm not trying to push you away from Self Employment, but you need to evaluate all aspects of Working at Home.

If you still have the DESIRE and DEDICATION, you can SUCCEED.

I'm going to try ProBlogger.com as suggested, and different search engines as well. I still don't have any results from Yahoo, I do know it will take some time.
While Working at Home it is easy to get distracted. One way to get around that is to remove as many distractions as possible eg. TV, radio, CD's , what ever takes you away from the task at hand. Consentrate on the work that has to be done in order to accomplish your objective, Making Money at Home.

I did try out FeedBurner as was suggested by someone on the Work at Home Forum. It is easy to set up, but you are supposed to supply your own subscribers... This is something I wanted an RSS feed for, to get people to visit my site.
They do have some RSS feeds that read their subscriber posts, but I still don't know which ones.
I did put a link on Yahoo's browser, but it will take some time to see any results, if at all.
You can't put FeedBurner's link on some feeds as given. I will try to find a way and post it...

It seems to be all real people, not a bunch of advertisers trying to sell you something. It is free, and the advice is usually informative. I KNOW IT'S SUNDAY...but my home team has a bye week...
Usually, I will take Sunday off for football. But I had an idea that if I changed the name of my Blog slightly, by adding Working at Home, it might give a better quick view of what it's all about.
Since I have started working at home, not just self-employed, I found that if an idea pops in my mind I can make it happen right away.
There is always something that you think of to help your business and if you don't write it down, you forget. Since my Home Office is right here, I can implement an idea right away.
If you have an idea that may help in my endeavor to Work at Home, use the comments field below. REAL PEOPLE ONLY, NO COMPUTER GENERATED JUNK...
(I know, I can block it, but I don't like the idea of having to prove I'm human by filling out that sign in thing).

Working on a Saturday...You do what you have to do in order to succeed.
Today I'm trying to find a better way to get my Blog seen. I have posted on /atom feeds, and found I need KEY WORDS to lead people interested in Working at Home to my site.
There doesn't seem to be any way on Blogspot, but when you sign up for some of the Blog Feeds, they do include key words, but only on their site.
Another reason to go to RSS...
By the way, do you like the additions to the Side Bar? (I don't get paid for them, but do get exposure)

Another Friday, and I appreciate the comments some of you have made.
The next big step is getting this posted on the Internet itself, not just Blog sites. I already have /atom.xml but according to some of the research I have done the real feed is RSS to get wider coverage.
I did get a free progam (30 day trial) for posting, but blogspot.com already has /atom, and now I need to find a way to actually have my post listed to RSS feeds.
Any suggestions???
I'll let you know how I make out.

So far the grand experiment is taking a little longer than I thought it would. Working at home DOES take a little effort...
Even with everyting I said about keeping a schedule, etc. PATIENCE is the virtue that eludes most upstarts.
To be a SELF-STARTER you must be DETERMINED to SUCCEED. Make a game plan and stick to it, no matter how much effort it takes (if sounds like I'm trying to convince myself; I AM). You too, must convince yourself. You are the one that will benifit from your efforts.
Hope this helps a little.

Working at Home, sure it's a way to be independent, but it takes a lot of dedication. You have to make sure you treat it like a real job. Don't get into an attitude of I'll get around to it later, that's the BEST way to FAIL...
If you really want to succed, remember, it's YOUR BUSINESS. Treat it as such, keep a schedule, keep regular hours, don't fall into bad habits.
If you do finally succed, make lots of money, then you may have the time to do all those things you dream of...
Until then, WORK HARD!!!
